What is Digital X-ray?
Digital radiography (digital x-ray) is a form of x-ray imaging where digital x-ray sensors are used instead of traditional photographic film, meaning x-ray images are available instantly on a computer. Advantages include increased efficiency by eliminating the need for chemical processing and the ability to digitally transfer and enhance images. More importantly it requires reduced amounts of radiation as compared to the traditional method, meaning less exposure to patients. Digital x-ray has also far better resolution and image clearance than conventional x-ray.
Preparation for Digital X-ray?
There are no specific preparation guidelines that we require patients to follow when preparing for an x-ray. However, we recommend that you wear comfortable clothing as will be asked to change. We also advise that you wear a minimal amount of jewelry as you may be required to remove them. Your items will be securely locked for the duration of your exam.
What do I Expect?
Don’t worry, the x-rays are painless and the exam only takes a few minutes.
On the day of the exam your healthcare provider may or may not ask you to pay attention to the following:
Arrival: You should plan to arrive early. Arriving early helps the testing stay on schedule.
Upon arriving at Jahmale, you will be greeted by our friendly and knowledgeable staff that will register and help you get ready for your exam. Our dedicated Radiographer will walk you through the exam, answer any questions you may have and ask you to sign a consent form.
You will be required to change into a hospital gown and remove all objects that are not permitted in the X-ray room. This includes all removable metallic, magnetic, electronic and mechanical implants, devices or objects. Your items will be securely locked for the duration of your exam. You should inform your doctor and the radiographer if you have any non-removable implants, devices or objects. At Jahmale, we encourage you to be an ambassador of your own health, feel free to ask questions or seek clarity whenever you require it.
You may be asked to stand, sit or lay on a table, depending on what area of your body is being examined. You will be positioned by the radiographer so that the area of interest is in the proper field of view.
The radiographer will instruct you to hold still and in some cases to hold your breath while the x-ray is being taken to eliminate blurring on the image. X-ray exams generally take less than 20 minutes; after which you will be able to return to your normal activities.
When will I receive my results?
If you have had an X-ray for the same body part done at a different facility, please bring or have the images sent to Jahmale Medical Solutions, ideally prior to your appointment. This allows the radiologist a comparison of former studies to current.
The Radiologist (a doctor with special training) will review your exam in a detailed manner and prepare a report that explains them. You will usually get the radiologist report within 24 to 48 hours. However, film or a compact disc (CD) of your images may be given to you after the exam.
Once a radiologist and your healthcare provider have reviewed the results, you will either have another appointment or receive a call. Your healthcare provider will discuss the results with you.
